We’ve recently filed
comments in response to the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Notice of Inquiry (NOI) for the implementation of a national broadband Internet plan, especially in underserved communities. Our comments focused on the need to encourage broadband Internet adoption and make affordable high-speed Internet available. We must keep high-speed Internet affordable to ensure that the last one’s on, are not the first one’s off the broadband train and continue to highlight the benefits of broadband Internet access, so that citizens will want to join the digital revolution and adopt high-speed Internet.
Our NOI comments discussed educating citizens on the benefits of broadband Internet access through digital literacy programs. These programs will stimulate broadband Internet adoption by familiarizing participants with technology and raising awareness of the benefits of broadband service. Of course, digital literacy alone will not deliver broadband for those who cannot afford this technology. To address high-speed Internet affordability issues, targeted programs that provide broadband access through community broadband centers in libraries, schools and other government buildings merit consideration.
Every American in the 21st century should have access to affordable and reliable broadband, which will enhance the quality of life through the delivery of vital Internet services in communities and particularly underserved neighborhoods across the United States.
